The well of ascension is the second book in Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series. The world Sanderson creates is fascinating, though a little dark.
His magic system is so unique. Imagine people who get certain powers from swallowing certain metals! Cool!
And the idea of the first book, Mistborn, is also pretty unusual. A crew of thieves overthrows Lord Ruler, the godlike being who is an emperor over almost all of the world.
In the second book, many see the fall of the empire as their chance to proclaim themselves kings. What follows is basically The game of thrones. All those kings play power games, while arises a bigger problem that Lord Ruler had kept in check so far.
War. Mists killing people. Lies. It's a hard world to live in but people did their best to survive and it was inspiring.
What was sad about the story was how people rejected someone good who had their best interests in mind as their king because they saw him as weak, undependable and living in a fantasy. They preferred to have someone "strong". That is the problem in our world too - people don't let good people to lead.
